These people will be able to give you the information you need to be able to discern whether it's a good decision to have the person who gave their contact information to you as a landlord. It is also important that you check the credentials and identities of this people - nothing too extensive though - so you can also verify the veracity of their statements.   It may seem to be a bit tedious, but in the long run, it will serve you well. Just like in any business partnership, it is important that both parties are reasonable and not hard to work with. If not, it will only result in more trouble for you.
